Welcome to ENGLISH 107-14 Composition II!

English 107 focuses on developing your ability to write clearly, effectively, and appropriately for different audiences and purposes. You will learn how to organize ideas, adjust style and tone, and use language in ways that meet the expectations of college-level and professional writing.

More broadly, this course introduces you to the kind of writing used by university professors, scholars, and educated professionals in their fields. This style of writing—often called academic discourse—is more formal, precise, and carefully structured than everyday conversation. It shows that you can work with complex ideas, support claims with evidence, and communicate thoughtfully within a scholarly community.

Because academic writing is not something most people use in daily life, it takes practice. Throughout the semester, you will build the skills needed to express your own ideas and perspectives clearly and confidently in this style, preparing you for future coursework and professional communication.

While academic writing varies somewhat across different disciplines, this course will give you the tools and practice needed to make effective rhetorical choices for a wide range of academic audiences. You will learn how to adapt your writing based on purpose, audience, and context—skills that are just as important beyond the university as they are within it.

Strong writing leads to clearer thinking, greater credibility, and greater influence. Developing these abilities is a central goal of this course. Because English 107 is interdisciplinary, you will also learn how to locate, evaluate, and document research using APA format, the citation system required for this course.
