October 2020: New Google Meet Features NOT Available to IU Users

You may have heard that Google, Microsoft, and other similar platforms have been releasing new features at unprecedented speed! However, please note that there may be features you've read about that may not apply to Immaculata University users.

Immaculata University users fall under the standard G Suite for Education license. This offers many great benefits over traditional free Google accounts, including unlimited cloud storage and expanded Google Meet capabilities. However, this license does not offer all the features and new rollouts you may have recently heard or read about (i.e., many features are reserved for Enterprise Licenses only).

Some features that DO NOT apply to IU users include the following:

  • Official Breakout Rooms (Note: Since G Suite for Education allows users to participate in an unlimited number of Google Meet sessions simultaneously, this becomes a highly effective and flexible alternative solution.)
  • Attendance Reports
  • Uploading of Custom Backgrounds

Some key features that have temporarily been granted to IU users, but will soon be expiring include the following:

  • Live Streaming Up to 250 participants (will revert to 100 max participants)
  • Unlimited storage of Meet recordings (will revert to 30-day storage. Other restrictions may be applied).

July 2020: COVID-19 Policies (Syllabus Addendum)

All courses with IU-Owned content will not automatically display a Syllabus Addendum with regards to new COVID-19 policies. IMPORTANT: This automation is contingent upon the course syllabus having the word "syllabus" in its title.

July 2020: Messages/Quickmail Logging Enabled

To request a report of the Moodle or Quickmail messages you've sent or received, please email Sergio Aclo (saclo@immaculata.edu).

June 2020: Teams Scheduler

Within every course, you'll now find a link to a Microsoft Teams Scheduler web application. This can also be accessed by clicking on the Microsoft Teams icon atop every Text Editor box found in Moodle.

Using this application, you can schedule Microsoft Teams events for which you are assigned as the organizer. It also generates a link to your meeting, which you can then share with others via Moodle (e.g., message, discussion board, assignment module, etc.), email, or other communication platforms.

May 2020: Course Navigation

To help make course navigation easier for all users, we've deployed a change in the Course Navigation structure of the main menu column.

Previously, all courses were listed on the left-hand menu of every page in Moodle. However, as users added more courses, it became increasingly difficult to quickly access and navigate to courses. To resolve this, the courses in Moodle's menu system are now divided into two main categories: "My Current Courses" and "My Other Courses".

My Current Courses

This section of the menu lists all of the courses that are currently active. This means that the current date is after the course start date but prior to the course end date. For example, this announcement is being written on May of 2020, so users will not be able to see Fall 2020 courses by default. (Note: There is a 14-day buffer, which means that a course that is scheduled to "start" 14 days or less from the current date will appear in the My Current Courses section, along with any courses that ended no more than 14 days ago.)

My Other Courses

All of your other courses can be found in the various sub-categories of My Other Courses. For example, if you have courses for an upcoming term, you will find them in the "Future Courses" subcategory. When you click on each sub-category, you will see a new window with a table that shows the queried courses and other important course details (e.g., your role, the start/end date, course visibility, etc.).

OTHER METHODS OF ACCESSING COURSES

The other normal methods of accessing courses still apply as well.

  • Profile Page: Go the your profile page to see a list of all of the courses that are visible to your role.
  • Dashboard: You'll find several "Blocks" where you can navigate to your courses, such as the filterable Course Overview block.
  • Course Search Bar: On almost every page in Moodle, the search bar immediately beneath the header images can be used to search for any course which has been made visible to you.
